| The Beauty Lounge.
At this light relaxed first floor beauty boudoir, with an adjoining hair and make up agency and beauty salon, I was taught how to get dewy skin with dark, modern eyes – something I’ve never been able to do myself. There was a huge variety of brands available, which was great, because the make up artist, Jo Bull, could recommend exactly the right products for my skin and colouring. Advice I took, as it was Bull who created Scarlett Johansson’s amazing Marilyn look for the Baftas.
What I learnt: apply foundation in sections, starting with the forehead, then the nose, then cheeks, blotting on small dots as you go. Before applying concealer, tilt your head down to see which areas are darkest and need most highlighting. Also how to do my eyes – I liked her recommendations so much I brought all the shadows she picked out for me.

Beauty Virgins
My idea of wearing make-up is a dash of mascara, bronzer applied at random and to top it off, strawberry-flavoured lip balm – adequate when you’re 21, not when you’re 29 and need a little more help. Walking through the doors of The Beauty Lounge, I was excited by the prospect of a revamp, but worried if I had enough ‘girly-factor’ for a make-up lesson – the last time I played with lipstick was at the age six.
The idea behind the lesson is to get insider-tips from make-up artists who usually practise their skills on supermodels and pop stars. So, whether you want to get out of a make-up rut (like me) or advice on how to apply the latest beauty trends, they can tailor your session accordingly. I wanted to learn how to use blusher and lipstick (my make-up phobias) without looking like Aunt Sally and get that fresh dewy glow a la Kylie Minogue. So Sammy Jackson, my make-up artist, set to work. The first thing she did was go through my existing products, telling me what to ditch and what to keep. Then she talked me through my skin tone: what colours suited me and how to make the most of my good points (bright blue eyes) and disguise the bad (dull skin), writing down the products so I could buy them if I wanted. Because The Beauty Lounge isn’t affiliated to any brand, they recommend what works best for you so you can go for pricey or affordable products. I went for a mix and those recommended ranged from Estee Lauder to Tesco. I left with lots of expert tips, short cuts for when I’m late and a new confidence to try different colours or products. For a make-up novice, it was an hour well spent and, with a newly acquired knack for using blusher and lipstick, it left me feeling altogether more glam.
